Teachers’ training workshop begins at GCU

A three-day training workshop on “Outcome Based Education in Higher Education Institutions” Monday began at the Government College University Lahore under the auspices of its Quality Enhancement Cell (QEC) and Learning Innovation Division, Higher Education Commission. Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah chaired the inaugural session of the workshop attended by young faculty members from different departments of the university.
Speaking on the occasion, Prof Dr Hassan Shah said that pedagogy (student centred learning) has become highly advanced, so the training for the university teachers, especially young faculty members, must be declared mandatory.
Prof. Shah asked the participants of the workshop to focus on all the students in their classroom and encourage them to ask questions. He added that all students had the capacity to learn well although in different ways and on different days. He hoped that the participants would endeavour to apply what they gained from the training. He also lauded the initiatives of GCU Quality Enhancement especially its efforts for capacity building of the university teachers.
Giving details of training, GCU QEC Director Ms. Iram Sohail said that the topics, they would cover in nine technical sessions of the workshop, included students’ assessment techniques, communication skills, quality assurance, critical thinking and reasoning and how to develop learning outcomes in the context of outcome based learning. She also said students’ achievement was one of the most rewarding aspects of teaching profession.
Addressing the first technical session, Dr Hafsa Zainab, Chairperson Department of Anatomy, University of Veterinary and Animal Sciences Lahore said that university teachers were not supposed to teach a specific discipline; rather their job description was wider and also included a responsibility to promote critical thinking in their students.
GCU Registrar Mr. Saboor Ahmed Khan also attended the inaugural session of the training workshop which would conclude on Wednesday, November 22, 2017.
