Serena Williams will not defend her Title in Australian Open
A very clear tweet by Serena Williams
“After Performing in my first match after giving birth I realized that although I am super close I’m not where I personally want to be, My coach and team always said “Only go to tournaments where you are prepared to go all the way”. With that being said I am disappointed to say I’ve decided not to compete in the Australian Open this year. However, the memory of last year’s Open is one that will carry with me and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again. I appreciate the support and understanding of my fans and everyone at the Australian Open.”
Serena William is 36 years old and 7 times winner of Australian Open Grand slam, confirmed on Friday that she wouldn’t appear to secure title she won in Melbourne last year, Williams needs only one more title to equalize the all-time held record by Margret Court, she won 13 of her 24 Grand Slams titles, saying she wasn’t convinced she could win it.
“After competing in Abu Dhabi I realized that although I am super close, I’m not where I personally want to be,” Williams said in a statement released by the Australian Open. “My coach and team always said ‘only go to tournaments when you are prepared to go all the way’. I can compete – but I don’t want to just compete, I want to do far better than that and to do so, I will need a little more time.”
“With that being said, and even though I am disappointed about it, I’ve decided not to compete in the Australian Open this year. The memory of last year’s Open is one that I will carry with me, and Olympia and I look forward to coming back again. I appreciate the support and understanding of my fans and everyone at the Australian Open.”
Tournament director Craig Tiley said Serena Williams waited as long as she could before letting organizers know she wouldn’t be able to compete.
“I’ve been in constant contact with Serena and her team and know this is why she has pushed it and pushed it until the 11th hour to make her final decision,” he said. Organizers later announced that French Open semifinalist Timea Bacsinszky had also withdrawn after failing to recover in time following surgery on her right hand in September.
