DIGITALIZATION OF AGRICULTURE DATA BY AgriSmart APP; BENEFITING FARMERS-Dr. Umar Saif

The digitization of agricultural data through Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB)’s AgriSmart Application developed for the Punjab Public Management Reform Program (PPMRP) is benefiting farmers and made advisory services easily accessible to them. Dr. Umar Saif Advisor to the CM Punjab, Chairman PITB and founding Vice Chancellor Information Technology University (ITU) the Punjab observed while chairing a meeting here today to review the progress of the application to help streamline tasks of agriculture extension workers of the Punjab’s provincial government.
He directed the concerned officials to make best use of the database of reported activities to plan interventions to improve yields and maximize land use. Prior to this application there was no accurate record of field staff as 67% of their time was spent in departmental tasks instead of fieldwork while this application has brought down the field staff’s time to only 15%.
The meeting was informed that from April 2015 to July 2017 2724 field workers equipped with smartphones carrying the AgriSmart has marked 2.2 million entries. The application also has a feedback option to enable farmers to share ideas with the government.
The modern farmer extension services through AgriSmart is used to create digital database of Farmer advisory services, Plant clinics, Crop reporting, Pest scouting and warnings, Farmer trainings, Monitoring of agriculture inputs, Soil sampling and testing, Fertilizer monitoring and testing and Research trials.
